MIDNIGHT MANIA

Role: Lead Modeller

Midnight Mania is a 3D Tower Defence game developed in Singapore Polytechnic, for PC.

It features a light mechanic unique to any tower defence.

It was developed from 2021 to 2022, by a six-man team, Cocktale. The total production time took about 5 months.

I took part in this project as the lead modeller, making sure the other modellers create a harmonious artstyle. I was also tasked as the environment artist, where I created Autodesk Maya scenes of the concepted enviroment.

This being my first 3D game, I took the time and learned many tips and tricks, that would be useful to me in the future.

Dark, Mysterious Room

As one of the environment artist, I was instructed to create an environment that is a children's playroom, full of toys, as the same time, dark and mysterious.

Character Models

My main participation in this project is my contribution of the character models. All character models were modelled, rigged, and UV'ed by me. There are a total of 12 different models, including the enemies.

Enviroment Props

During the conceptual stage, I was tasked to create a playroom of a child. I modelled the scene in Autodesk Maya as a mockup, and added preliminary props to the scene. Most of the props, were modelled, rigged and UV'ed by me. There are a total of more than 13 props (displayed below) in the scene.

What I would have done better

This project being my first 3D game, I was widely inexperienced. Through this project, I learnt as I modelled more and more. One thing I would do better if I could, was to optimize my models better. For a tower defence, the models are way too detailed and have too high of a poly count. If I were to do it again, I would use the method of baking textures into the models to create details, instead of settling with a high poly prop.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I enjoyed developing my first 3D game. I thoroughly enjoyed being the lead modeller and assisting other modellers in achieving the harmonious art style. I have learned many tips and tricks for modelling throughout the project.
